, young people are valued as experts in their own experience and choose to engage in whichever way makes sense for them. Youth are involved in everything that we do, every step of the way. We explore, co-create and prototype using iterative cycles that involve youth and adult partners to discuss and design what matters to them in mental health.

Everything we do originates through interaction with youth and the professionals who serve them. Working alongside young people, every actor in the system has the potential to make meaningful change in how we conceptualize and ensure the mental well-being of Canadian youth. mindyourmind impacts systems change by increasing the capacity of young people to reach out, get help and give help through the use of technology, engagement and research-informed innovation.

Man Therapy is a resource that offers tools and resources to men as it applies to suicide prevention, stress management and mental health.

Suicide is a complex issue with many unique, contributing variables. While there is no magic solution when it comes to suicide prevention, we believe the best defence is a good offence. After years of research, Man Therapy® was created as an upstream approach to preventing suicide for the highest-risk men, who often don't receive support.

The innovative campaign and 24/7 digital platform gets working-aged men to think differently about their mental health and take action before they ever reach a point of crisis. Man Therapy® has spent over ten years breaking down barriers to help-seeking behaviour and smashing the notion that men can't talk about their feelings.

Man Therapy® was created by a multidisciplinary team of suicidologists, mental health experts, marketing strategists, and creatives to make mental health approachable by using humour to break stigma and help men take action with tools and resources.

Alberta Family Wellness Initiative

The Alberta Family Wellness Initiative (AFWI) facilitates research and shares knowledge about the science of brain development to support positive lifelong health outcomes for everyone.

The AFWI mobilizes knowledge about early brain development and its connection to lifelong physical and mental health. We form the bridge between the latest scientific knowledge about brain development and what is actually done in policy and practice.

The Alberta Family Wellness Initiative (AFWI) officially began in 2007, but its origins date back further. It was 2004 when the Palix Foundation (then called the Norlien Foundation) set its sights on an ambitious goal: to improve outcomes in health and wellbeing for children and families across Alberta.

To achieve this goal, the foundation understood that it must bridge the considerable gap between the latest scientific knowledge about brain development, mental health, and addiction, and what is actually done in policy and practice.

The AFWI was created to perform this work and make these connections. As the initiative has become established, it has broadened its mandate and agenda.

The symptoms of burnout and depression are quite similar so sometimes its hard to tell which one you are dealing with. According to the APA Dictionary of Psychology, burn out is “physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance, and negative attitudes towards oneself and others”.

Burnout occurs when you have unhealthy work-life balance for a prolonged period. Sometimes things get busy at work or school, and it can be stressful to deal with the extra workload, but this happens from time to time. It’s a problem when this extra workload is constant, and you never have a chance to wind down. Burnout can happen for many other reasons, including taking on family caregiving roles without enough support, being in a toxic work/home environment, lack of sleep and a multitude of other reasons. Burnout does not happen overnight, and slowly you are less able to cope with work.

Most of the time, burnout is specific to work or school, whereas depression seeps into every area of your life. When you are experiencing burnout, you can still enjoy other parts of your life. But for the tasks or work in question it is not simply procrastinating a task, it is becoming distant, numb, and mindlessly doing the task; or it could be becoming annoyed or aggravated that you must do a task you were previously okay with.

Lastly, symptoms of burnout, specifically the fatigue, apathy towards work and performance issues, disappear when the work and home environment improve.

For example, Tom is in their 1st year of university enrolled in a psychology degree. He is extremely excited to start school because he has always had a passion for the subject. It is the first time he has lived by himself, so he goes home on the weekends. After the first semester he notices that during the week he is always tired, he feels sick some days, and has anxiety on and off. When he goes home for the weekend, he doesn’t feel any of these symptoms. Soon, he starts to dread going to school and doesn’t understand why he has no interest in his favourite subjects. His parents recommended he talk to the school counsellor, and they decided that he should drop one of his classes so he can have more time to hang out during the week. After this change he found that he was no longer tired during the week, and he was enjoying his classes once again.

How to Prevent & Alleviate Symptoms of Burnout:

Understand that we all need breaks and pay attention to the signs you need one. If you recognize burnout early on you can prevent severe symptoms.

Be aware that your capacity to work is not always constant

Talk to your boss, teacher, or family if you are feeling overburdened. Maybe they can help you change your schedule, take some of the load away, or you can take some time off work.

Re-evaluate your work-life balance and create time management strategies that work for you.

Prioritize sleep and enjoyable activities, learn mediation techniques and exercise

Build your resilience (Much easier said than done, that’s for sure!)

Do you have a growth or a fixed mindset?

By Julien Quickstad, Psychology with My Wife Podcast

A fixed mindset is where you believe that your intelligence, qualities, and talents are fixed traits. There are some things you are good at, and some things you are not. Failure is the worst thing that can happen to someone with a fixed mindset, which leads to avoiding challenges all together.

Do you want someone to think you are weak or incapable? Heck no! Anything you are not good at is a direct blow to your ego and who you are as a person, but if you just do things that you are good at everyone will think you are capable, intelligent, and have superior qualities!

Some people aren’t as smart as you or aren’t as athletic than you; others are smarter and more athletic. When you hold a fixed mindset, you believe everyone has intrinsic qualities that make us better or worse at things. Really, it’s not learning or becoming better at something; it is always being the best at something. What a pessimistic way of thinking!

A growth mindset means that you feel your talents and traits are malleable. When faced with a challenge, an individual with a growth mindset will consider it an opportunity to develop the qualities the task demands.

This means that intellect, character, and your expertise, are external qualities apart from who you are. For those with a growth mindset it is not about the journey but the destination (cliché, I know). You are born with certain qualities, but they are just the beginning of where you can end up.

Let’s look at the thought process of someone with a fixed mindset vs. a growth mindset:

Your mindset can determine the interactions with others, your career decisions, and your thought process in basically every part of your life. The key to hacking your mindset is focusing on the qualities that you need to learn to be successful rather than the specific habits that you need to be doing. If you want to learn more checkout:

Things to know about Counselling

Counselling agencies typically don’t require a referral. Most therapists don’t either, unless it’s need it for insurance purposes. To see a psychiatrist, you will need a referral from your family doctor or go to emergency if in crisis. Counsellors and therapists that work for the health authority can be accessed for free; private counsellors and therapists may have a fee. If you have any employee benefits, check to see if these services may be covered.

What should I remember in my doctor or counselling appointment?:

           • Be proud of yourself.
• Be honest and open.
• Ask for clarity.
• Write your questions in advance of your appointment.
• Keep notes.

Here are a few questions you may want to ask your doctor/counsellor:

           • When should I come back?
• How often will I be seen?
• How long will treatment last?
• What are the most important things I can do to feel better?
• What are my treatment options?
• If medication is prescribed, what is the medicine designed to do?
• How fast will it work?
• What are some possible side effects?
